Sometimes, you think you're going on a run, but you find yourself drenched in sweat and low on energy at mile 2, and you suddenly realize that you're on a hike instead.

While I was adjusting to this new reality, I heard something crashing around in the leaves right off the trail. I saw one bear cub about fifteen feet away from me, and another a few feet off the ground in a nearby tree. My desire to snap a picture was overruled by my desire to not meet the mother bear, so I picked up the pace until I was a good mile away.

The rest of the hike was a battle with nausea, dehydration, and horseflies. It's hard to say who won, but I was happy to return to my car a few hours later, turn on the a/c, and drive back to my couch, where I plan to stay for a while.
