Morning Run

This is the first 5 days of a week-long section hike on the Appalachian Trail from Deep Gap, NC to Fontana Lake.

Day 5 was sadly cut short by Tropical Cyclone Zeta. Fortunately, we were able to get cell service from the shelter the night before the storm and learned that it was coming. We were able to find a shuttle from Burningtown Gap to the NOC for the morning of day 5. The 1 mile hike from the shelter down to the gap in the dark (at 7am), during the heart of the storm, was a harrowing experience. The wind gusts were 60-65mph range, parts of the trail had turned in to a raging torrent, and trees were falling everywhere. Ultimately, we made it to the NOC unscathed, albeit soaked, and were able to pick up the trail there the next day. We're planning to go back in 2021 to do the Cold Spring to NOC stretch, to fully round out this 80-ish mile section of the trail.

Day 1: Deep Gap to Carter Gap Shelter (8.5 miles)

Day 2: Carter Gap Shelter to trail-side camp site about 0.5 mile north of Wallace Gap (13 miles)

Day 3: trail-side camp to Siler Bald Shelter (8 miles)

Day 4: Siler Bald Shelter to Cold Spring Shelter (12.5 miles)

Day 5: Tropical Cyclone Zeta! Cold Spring Shelter to Burningtown Gap (1.1 miles)
